Advanced Treatment Options for Glaucoma

Medication

Prescription eyedrops which help reduce intraocular pressure are typically the first line treatment used in glaucoma. There are various types of glaucoma eyedrops, and our doctors will come up with a customized regimen to best maintain your vision, while minimizing side effects.

Laser

There are different laser procedures used to treat glaucoma, which reduce the intraocular pressure by increasing the drainage of fluid out of the eye or decreasing the amount of fluid produced inside the eye. Our doctors will customize your treatment based on the type and stage of glaucoma you have.

Surgery

The goal of glaucoma surgery is to reduce the intraocular pressure usually by creating an additional pathway for fluid to exit the eye. Surgical treatment is typically considered when medical (eyedrops) or laser treatment is ineffective or poorly tolerated. Traditional glaucoma surgeries, such as trabeculectomies and tube shunts, can be effective.

However, recovery can sometimes be prolonged and there are also some potential complications that can actually reduce the vision. There have been significant advances in surgical procedures known as Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS). MIGS consists of several different techniques which can reduce the intraocular pressure effectively with quicker recovery time and less risk of serious visual complications.
